GR914 Uniform and Gear Requirements

This list constitutes what an average infantryman would have for basic and visible gear. Additional items may be obtained as the member sees fit, such as a blanket, zelt poles and stakes, additional personal gear/items (like period correct socks) so on. New members should contact established members for recommendations of vendors; it never hurts to ask a question before spending money on something that is not correct!

The unit does have a small amount of loaner uniforms and gear so that new or prospective members can field for an event- it is still important to obtain at least the minimum uniform requirements as soon as one can, that way, even if you do not have the gear or weapon to field, you will be able to at least walk around at an event.

Minimum uniform requirements for members aged 25 years and younger:

  • M43 Wool Field Cap
  • M43 Wool Tunic with Heer Infantry insignia
  • Service Shirt (with or without pockets)
  • M43 Wool Pants
  • M42 Helmet (no decals)
  • Low boots
  • Gamaschen/leggings

Minimum uniform requirements for members aged 26 years and older:

  • M38 or M43 Wool Field Cap
  • M36, M40, or M43 Wool Tunic with Heer Infantry insignia
  • Service Shirt (with or without pockets)
  • M37 or M43 Wool Pants
  • M35, M40 or M42 Helmet (prefer no decals, but single decal is acceptable.)
  • M31 Marching/Jackboots or low boots
  • Gamaschen/leggings (if not wearing jackboots)

While not necessary it is highly recommended that the member also purchase the wool overcoat and other items for cooler nights, and the winter months, as well as a lighter, summer/work uniform- wearable by regulation from April to September.

  • Wool Overcoat (M42 for those 25 and younger, M36, M40, or M42 for 26 and older)
  • Wool toque
  • Wool scarf (prefer no stripe)
  • Wool gloves (white rings to indicate size)
  • M43 HBT Tunic (for those 26 and older the two pocket HBT drillichanzug is acceptable)
  • M40 or M43 HBT Pants

It is preferred that all gear items are made of blackened leather, however some made of webbing material is accepted. Ask for advice when choosing a vendor for webbing items as some are incorrectly constructed and colored; usually blackened leather is the easiest, and cheapest, to obtain.

Requirements for infantryman gear:

  • M31 or M41 Infantry Y-Straps
  • M31 Gas mask canister
  • M31 Belt (with painted Heer belt buckle)
  • M31 Mess tin (some postwar models are acceptable)
  • Folding or straight shovel with carrier
  • K98k Bayonet with frog
  • K98 Ammo pouches
  • M31 or M44 Bread bag
  • M31 or M43 Canteen
  • M31 Heer Zeltbahn

If eyeglasses are needed please obtain period correct wire-frame glasses or wear contact lenses. In certain situations, or for medical reasons, period correct sunglasses will be considered, but this will be at the discretion of the unit commander or ranking unit member attending the event.

The unit does maintain a small selection of loaner weapons but it is recommended that members at least purchase a Mauser K98k with cleaning rod and sling. While the German variant of K98k is the best option, Czech (vz.24, K98k, capture K98k) Yugoslavian (K98k, capture K98k, immediate postwar production) FN, Israeli, Norwegian, Portuguese, etc. are also considerations, as long as it retains the look of a K98k. Rifles such as later Yugoslavian K98’s, M48’s, and later variants are too visibly different and must be refused. A weapon will most likely be the single most expensive item to obtain for an infantryman impression! Depending on impression and age various models of pistol and SMG can be considered, but should stick to the Walther P38, Luger P.08, MP40, or MP38. If a member has the financial ability the G41, G43, MP43, MP44, and the machine gun models MG34 and MG42 can be considered, but be mindful that these weapons are expensive to fix should something go wrong, or missing, during an event! Additional pouches are required to field different weapons.
